The NC State gymnastics team continued its successful weekend at its quad meet, finishing in first place with a final score of 196.025.
Following the Wolfpack’s (10-4, 5-2 EAGL) performance, George Washington University trailed close behind with a collective score of 195.900. Northern Illinois placed third over Temple, 195.450-195.075.
On the vault, the Wolfpack started strong with freshman Emily Shepard with a leading score of 9.850 to tie for first place with the Colonials sophomore Deja Chambliss. Senior Alexis Beucler tied with four other gymnasts for third place with a final score of 9.800. Beucler and juniors Lauren Kent and Katie Cox all tied their career highs on the vault. Senior Drew Grantham took a day off on the vault as senior Melissa Brooker attempted the vault and scored a 9.525. The Pack compiled a score of 48.900, just shy of topping its season high on the vault, 48.925.
Moving to bars, Shepard once again led the Pack to first place on the podium and tied with four gymnasts from Temple with a score of 9.875. The Pack had another strong performance on the bars, 49.175.
The Wolfpack’s biggest struggle came on the beams. Junior Kasey Nelson, having an off day, scored a low 9.450 compared to her normally well-executed routine of 9.800. Freshman Chloe Negrete earned a 9.875 to tie for second place. The Pack still performed well finishing with a score of 48.900.
The Pack executed well on the floor, scoring 49.050. Grantham solely held first place with a score of 9.925, a tie for her career high. Shepard tied for fourth place, 9.850. Brooker also participated on the floor and finished with a score of 9.725.
Kent was the only gymnast from the Pack to compete in all four events. Kent finished second, trailing Chambliss 39.275-39.100. Kent’s score of 39.200 is a new season high.
The Wolfpack will remain on the road for its next quad-meet against Cornell, Penn State and EAGL Towson at University Park, PA on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 4 p.m.
