The NC State softball team swept the latter half of its Saturday doubleheader by defeating Saint Joseph’s at Dail Softball Field on Saturday as part of the Fairfield Crabtree Invitational.
After needing a late rally to win the first game, this time around it was the Wolfpack (10-4) getting on the scoreboard early. Senior center fielder Angie Rizzi led off the bottom of the second with a stand-up double, followed by a hit by redshirt junior shortstop Randi Farricker, who was tagged out trying to stretch the hit into a double. Senior designated player Brigette Nordberg slapped a home run over the center-field wall to make it 2-0 over the Hawks (3-5).
The Wolfpack extended its lead to 3-0 with a two-out rally in the bottom of the third. Senior right fielder Tatyana Forbes hit an infield single and junior infielder Logan Morris drove a double into right-center field to score Forbes.
To add to its lead, the Wolfpack blew up in the fourth inning, scoring four runs. Nordberg clocked a homer to put up the Pack up 5-0. Later in the frame, Morris drove in two more runs with an RBI single, scoring the sixth and seventh runs for NC State.
The second game also featured a quality performance from senior starting pitcher Devin Wallace, who threw five shutout innings and notched five strikeouts. NC State’s win was its eighth in its last nine games, as the Wolfpack has been nearly unbeatable since a 2-3 start to the season.
The Wolfpack will finish its homestand against Bucknell at Dail Softball Field on Sunday. First pitch will be at 12:30 pm.
