Sunday was a bittersweet day for the No. 12 NC State rifle team, as it narrowly lost out on a marquee win at home in Reynolds Coliseum over No. 7 Nebraska 4,685-4,663. But despite the loss, the Wolfpack posted its third-best outing of the season, and raised its NCAA qualifying score going into NCAA qualifiers.
Freshman Addy Burrow rose to the occasion as she scored 577 on the smallbore – just behind fellow freshman Makenzie Sheffield’s 578. Burrow continued her excellent play by scoring a team-best 592 in the air rifle. Burrow’s total of 1,169 was good enough for her to place inside the top three in Sunday’s event.
Sunday was also the last regular season rifle match for seniors Claire Zanti and Zach Eisenberg, who were honored by the Wolfpack rifle team shortly after the air rifle event. Zanti and Eisenberg both ended their rifle careers on a high note, as they both posted career highs in the air rifle with 589 and 587 respectively.
With that, rifle will head to Charleston, South Carolina for the NCAA Qualifiers on Feb. 22. The Wolfpack hopes for a good showing in order to boost its NCAA qualifying score, which at the moment is high enough for a No. 12 ranking, but not high enough to propel the team into the top eight and a spot in the NCAA Championship.
