The NC State men’s basketball team lost a close game on the road to Boston College 71-68 Sunday night. The Wolfpack (16-9, 7-7 ACC) came up short in a second-half comeback after trailing by as much as nine points to the Eagles (12-13, 6-8 ACC) early in the first half. Here are some important numbers from Sunday’s loss.
11 — Seconds left on the clock when NC State turned the ball over. NC State was only trailing by one point when Steffon Mitchell for Boston College stole the ball and passed it off for the fast break dunk to give the Eagles a three-point lead with only eight seconds left. The play turned out to be controversial, as the replay showed the Boston College player stepping out of bounds on the steal. However, it was deemed a non-reviewable play by the referees, so the score remained the same.
2 — 3-pointers hit by NC State out of 19 attempts from behind the arc. The team’s only 3s came from redshirt junior guard Devon Daniels and sophomore forward Jericole Hellems who hit one apiece. Junior guard Braxton Beverly and redshirt senior guard C.J. Bryce, who are normally accurate from 3-point range, went a combined 0 for 10, with Beverly missing four and Bryce missing six.
16 — Turnovers committed by the Wolfpack against the Eagles. Six came from Johnson in what was a forgettable night, and another five came from Daniels. The Pack did do a good job of creating turnovers on the defensive end of the ball though, causing Boston College to turn it over 15 times.
35 — Rebounds for NC State, as it did a good job of controlling the boards, outrebounding the Eagles by three. Daniels stepped for the Pack and grabbed 10 rebounds, with forwards redshirt junior D.J. Funderburk and redshirt freshman Manny Bates adding another six rebounds each.
45 — Points scored by Hellems, Bryce and Daniels as the trio combined for 66% of the team’s 68 total points. All three players scored 15 points and Daniels also added 10 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assist in a night to remember.
