The NC State baseball team is set to take on UNC-Wilmington for another home nonconference game at Doak Field Tuesday, Feb. 25.
The No. 13 Wolfpack (7-0) is coming off another series sweep against Tennessee Tech, its second this season and 17th straight nonconference series win. The Wolfpack’s bats were working yet again piling on 33 runs throughout the three-game series last weekend. It is also worth mentioning that NC State only gave up six runs in this series as well. The Seahawks (6-2) are coming off three wins at home last weekend, one against Bowling Green and two against Marshall.
NC State has had multiple players on fire at the plate to start the season. The first to mention is junior infielder/outfielder Devonte Brown who has been lighting it up with a .462 average, 12 hits, 13 RBIs and already three home-run bombs. He leads the NC State starters in all four of these categories so far and is also on a seven-game hitting streak.
Junior infielder Austin Murr has also been impressive on offense reaching base more than half the time with a .515 OBP which has helped him score nine runs. NC State’s depth on offense is impressive as well with six bench players over a .300 batting average, all bench players combining for 10 RBIs and 15 runs, and two home runs from occasional starter sophomore Vojtech Mensik.
The Wolfpack has also already crushed 10 home runs in seven games, compared to its opponents which have hit three. Like last year, the Wolfpack offense is looking terrifying for opposing pitchers.
The UNCW offense has also been decent to start the year, scoring 43 runs in its first eight games this year (NC State has 63 runs in seven games). The Seahawks’ offense has been led by infielder Ron Evans who is batting a solid .364 batting average with a .864 slugging percentage and three home runs to start the season. Evans also leads the teams in runs with eight and tied for first in RBIs with seven.
UNCW also has a strong lead-off hitter in outfielder Noah Bridges. He already has 13 hits on a .394 batting average and has shown speed on the bases with seven stolen bags —not to mention a home-run on top of that. Evans and Bridges are two players NC State pitchers should be careful dealing with.
Junior lefty David Harrison will start on the mound for the Wolfpack while righty Brody Lawson will start for UNCW. Harrison had a strong performance starting against Longwood last week, only giving up one run in 6.0 IP, fanning seven batters and coming away with the win. Harrison is now 1-0 on the season.
Lawson had a solid performance in his first start of the season as well but didn’t come away with the win against Coastal Carolina. He only gave up one run in 4.0 IP, struck out six batters and gave up two hits.
NC State’s defense so far has been stellar with opponents only scoring 15 runs against it in seven games while UNCW’s defense hasn’t been as top-notch, giving up 35 runs in eight games. However, NC State’s pitching will be tested against some very solid bats from Wilmington.
The first pitch will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25 at Doak Field and will be televised on ACC Network Extra.
