In the final meet of the regular season, the NC State swim team traveled north to Blacksburg, Virginia to take on Virginia Tech’s swim team. The men blew past Virginia Tech with a score of 178-120 and the women won by an even bigger margin of 181-114.
The men were led by senior Coleman Stewart and sophomore Nyles Korstanje. Stewart finished first in the 100 back (45.51), 100 fly (46.60) and the 200 IM (1:48.54). Stewart dominated in what is the final regular season meet of his Wolfpack career. Korstanje finished first in the 50 free (19.70) and the 100 free (43.79).
The men had several stellar performances and first-place finishes. Rafal Kusto finished in first for the 100 breast (55.73). The men had a first place finisher in every category except 200 back, 200 fly and 200 breast, which Jacob Johnson, Zachary Brown and Kusto finished in second respectfully. The men also had first-place finishers in 500 free with Curtis Wiltsey (4:27.67), 1,000 free Eric Knowles (9:06.27), and Hunter Tapp in the 200 free (1:37.05). The men ended the day with a second-place finish in the 200 free relay with Johnson, Rice, McGlaughlin and Sobolewski combining for a time of 1:21.80.
The woman had an even bigger victory with a score of 181-114 and had six different sweeps against the women Hokies. The Wolfpack women swept in the 200 free, 100 back, 100 breast, 50 free, 100 free and 200 breast. The Hokies proved to be no match for the dominating Wolfpack women. The women’s win was a real group effort with the team having several different winners in each category with Kate Moore being the only swimmer with multiple first-place finishes.
The women started the day with a 200 relay victory with Berkoff, Hansson, Rowe and Alons combining for a time of 1:38.22. The women’s first sweep of the day came in the 200 free with Kate Moore finishing in first with a time of 1:49.87 with Makaylas Sargent (1:50.01), Katharine Berkoff (1:50.73) and Faith Hefner (1:52.53) finishing behind her. The second sweep came in the 100 back with Emma Muzzy finishing on top with a time of 53.93 and Ky-lee Perry (54.46) and Maddy Flickinger (55.91) finishing in second and third. The next women’s sweep came in the 100 breast with Sophie Hansson (1:00.83), Julia Poole (1:02.30) and Anna Shumate (1:02.53) placing first through third. In the 50 free sweep, the Wolfpack was led by Sirena Rowe (22.80), Olivia Calegan (23.24), Heather Maccausland (23.37) and Katie Mack (23.76). The 100 free sweep was led by Julia Poole (50.83), Vasiliki Baka (51.01) and Heather Maccausland (51.15). The sixth and final sweep was in the 200 breast and was led by Olivia Calegan (2:16.86), Anna Shumate (2:18.82), Olivia Fisher (2:19.08) and Olga Lapteva (2:21.95).
The Wolfpack women also had first-place finishes in the 100 fly with Kylee Alons (1:58.79), the 200 back with Kate Moore (1:56.65) and the 1000 fly with Sirena Rowe (55.17). The only categories the women did not have a first-place finisher was 1,000 free relay and the 500 free with Mackenzie Glover and Katharine Berkoff finishing second.
Both the men and women will be preparing for the upcoming NCAA tournament.
