The NC State men’s basketball team lost a top-10 matchup at PNC Arena against No. 8 Florida State 67-61 Saturday afternoon. Despite leading by five points at halftime, the Wolfpack was unable to hold its lead against the Seminoles.
7 — Personal fouls Florida State committed in the first half before NC State committed its first one. The Wolfpack was able to push a 15-11 lead early on, partly as a result of the foul trouble.
6 — Opposite from the first half, NC State committed six personal fouls before Florida State committed one. This helped the Seminoles bust open a six-point lead early on in the second half after trailing by five at the break.
36 — Total number of personal fouls from the game for both teams. An intense and physical game all around, the officials kept note of this the entire game, and the fouls affected the score.
29 — Total number of free throw attempts by FSU. Adding to the troubles of the Pack were the persistent foul calls, leading to a 29-13 free throw attempt difference between the two teams. FSU made 18 of those free throws, missing seven in the final minute of the game.
22 — Number of bench points for both teams. With NC State having a much smaller bench than FSU, it capitalized offensively with backup players. Redshirt junior D.J. Funderburk got into foul trouble with 16:54 left in the second half, adding more pressure on the bench to pick up the points.
16:54 — Time left in the game when the Seminoles took the lead to win the game. The Wolfpack had led the majority of the game up to this point, but would not be able to capture the lead back after this point.
13 — Total amount of missed 3-pointers by the Pack. FSU played a very physical style of defense in the paint, and the Wolfpack tried to counter this by opening up shooters on the outside. However, it only went 6-19 for the entire game, concluding with a 31.6% average.
14 — Total number of missed 3-pointers by FSU. Even though the Pack did not capitalize on many 3-point opportunities, it also did not allow the Seminoles the same luxury. The Pack was very fast in rotation and was able to close out on dangerous shooters.
4 — Games left before the end of the regular season. As the season comes down the stretch, every game has even more weight for the Wolfpack to make the NCAA tournament. Two of the four games are home games, and two are against opponents it has beaten this season, including a top-10 win against Duke Wednesday, Feb. 19.
