Head football coach Dave Doeren announced Tim Beck’s hiring as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Wednesday afternoon. Beck replaces co-offensive coordinator Des Kitchings, who was let go, while co-offensive coordinator George McDonald remains on staff as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator and now adds the titles of assistant head coach and passing game coordinator. Kurt Roper, who has prior experience with running backs, will move from quarterbacks coach to coach that position group. Roper coached Arian Foster at Tennessee.
“I am so excited to bring Tim Beck to NC State to run our offense,” Doeren said in a release. “I have known Tim for over 20 years and know that he is a difference-maker who demonstrates what a leader, motivator, and connector is all about. He will take our offense and build it around the strengths of our personnel. It will be versatile, aggressive, and player-friendly.”
Beck has been an offensive coordinator at Power Five programs since 2011, with stints at Nebraska, Ohio State and Texas. During his time at Nebraska, Beck coached with offensive line coach John Garrison. Beck also worked with Doeren briefly during his time as a position coach at Kansas.
“Tim has worked with some of the best offensive coaches in the game at both Ohio State and Texas and I look forward to seeing him run his stuff here,” Doeren said in a release. “Since our time together at the University of Kansas I have wanted to work with him. He is also one of the best recruiters in college football.”
Quarterbacks have flourished under Beck. During his time at Nebraska, Taylor Martinez had 6,853 all-purpose yards and 39 touchdowns in two years before suffering a season-ending injury. Martinez was first-team All-Big 10 in 2012. In his last year at Ohio State, J.T. Barrett threw for 3,053 yards and 35 touchdowns, earning first-team All-Big 12 honors. At Texas, Sam Ehlinger has thrown for 8,669 yards on a career 63.1 completion percentage along with 89 total touchdowns. Ehlinger was a semifinalist for the Maxwell and Davey O’Brien awards in 2019.
“From developing me as a freshman all the way until now, all credit is due to him,” Ehlinger told the Austin American-Statesman prior to the Alamo Bowl. “I love him to death.”
Beck is rated the fifth-best recruiter in the country on the 247Sports composite, bringing in five four-star players and a five-star recruit in his previous class at Texas. His skills on the recruiting trail will be needed, as State lost its top recruiter with Kitchings gone.
“I’m thrilled about joining Coach Doeren’s staff at NC State and can’t wait to start working with our players,” Beck said in the release. “Coach Doeren and I have known each other for years and I firmly believe the future is bright for the Wolfpack. I want to thank Athletic Director Boo Corrigan and Coach Doeren for presenting me with such an incredible opportunity. My family and I couldn’t be more excited about being part of the NC State family.”
