On Tuesday, Jan. 28, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Warwick Arden and Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration Charles Maimone sent out a memo relating to a new coronavirus (2019-nCoV) discovered in China.
The new strain of coronavirus, which was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, has infected over 4,565 people and has killed a total of 106 in China as of Jan. 28, according to The Washington Post.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a statement saying this strain of coronavirus is not currently spreading among individuals in the United States. While there have been confirmed cases of the virus in the U.S., all of these have been individuals who visited the infected region and have not been spread from person to person.
As of Monday, Jan. 27, all of China is considered a Restricted Travel Area by the CDC. According to the memo, NC State will be prohibiting all university-sponsored travel to the country. Students who have traveled to the infected area since Dec. 1, 2019 and believe they may have contracted this strain of coronavirus are encouraged to call Student Health Services at 919-515-7107 before coming in to avoid any possible spread of the virus.
