Following its victory against UNC-Chapel Hill last night, the NC State swimming and diving team returned to the water for senior day at Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center to host Duke in its last home meet of the season.

The Wolfpack dominated the Blue Devils, with the women cruising past Duke 181-116. The men’s team sunk the Blue Devils by an even larger margin, winning with the highest score of the day, 191-104.

“I thought we were pretty good. Coming off yesterday, we had a pretty good meet yesterday. Sometimes those back-to-back competitions are tough,” said head coach Braden Holloway. “We had a lot of people come back and make some better corrections if they were doing the same race. We had a lot of people take advantage of opportunities today which I like to see. Obviously it wasn’t perfect, there were some areas that were lacking where I wanted to be better but then there were some areas where I was pretty happy with, so all in all I think it was a productive day for us.”

While the swimming events started to set up and get underway, the diving team kicked off the Wolfpack’s successful day. Senior Madeline Kline placed first for the 3-meter dive scoring 287.70. Kline continued her success for the 1-meter diving event, placing third with a final score of 278.18. Senior James Brady and freshman Bayne Bennett also set the tone for today’s meet by placing in the 3-meter and 1-meter diving events. Brady secured first place for both, 348.53 in the 3-meter event and 327.23 during the 1-meter event. Bennett placed second and third place in the 3-meter and 1-meter dive, respectively.

Senior day is always a big event to celebrate and say farewell to the upperclassmen. The seniors made sure to leave everything out on the water today. Seniors Makayla Sargent and Mackenzie Glover placed first and second, respectively, in the women’s 1,000-yard freestyle. Sargent finished strong, keeping her time under 10 minutes (9:50.14). Sargent also placed first in the 200-yard butterfly (1:59.81) and in the 400-yard individual medley (4:55.33).

Seniors Ky-lee Perry and Vasiliki Baka placed first and second, respectively, in the 100-yard freestyle. Perry finished with a final time of 49.39 and followed closely behind was teammate Baka with a score of 51.18. Senior Brooke Rubendall finished first with a time of 4:55.33 in the 500-yard freestyle.

The men’s 200-yard freestyle was dominated by the Wolfpack’s seniors, Coleman Stewart, Noah Hensley and Tyler Rice. Stewart finished first with a final time of 1:38.37 and continued his own success with a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 47.19.

“I think the event that kind of stuck out to me, definitely the events that I swam was the[200-yard freestyle],” said Stewart. “With our seniors going one-two-three in that, that was a really special thing for me personally.”

To round out a successful day for seniors, Mark McGlaughlin finished in first place in the men’s 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.22.

The Wolfpack returns to the pool against Virginia this Friday in Charlottesville at 4 p.m.
