Over the MLK weekend, the NC State club men’s basketball team played in the MLK Tournament at Wake Forest University. Team Wolf and Team Pack both participated in the tournament that was sponsored by both Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State University.
Teams were separated into four pools, and among the teams were NC A&T’s Undisputed team, Winston-Salem State’s Team A and Team B, UNC-Chapel Hill, Team Pack and Team Wolf, Campbell, UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Central’s Elite Team, UNC-Greensboro’s “The Jetsons” team and Wake Forest’s A and B teams.
Team Wolf went 5-0 in the tournament, winning the championship by defeating NC A&T’s Undisputed Team, and won every game by double digits. The team also beat UNC-Central in the semifinals, as well as Wake Forest Team A and Campbell in pool play. Junior forward Drew Harbour led the way for the team, winning the MVP award for the entire tournament.
Team Wolf is also joined by co-presidents senior guard Alex Capps and senior guard Riley Edwards, who helped lead the team over the weekend-long tournament.
Harbour did not play in the spring semester due to a study abroad program that he participated in, but he brings complete dominance to Team Wolf, being able to play both the power forward and small forward positions with a versatile playstyle.
Unfortunately, Team Pack went 1-2 in the Tournament, and did not qualify for any games past pool play. To make matters worse, junior wing Dane Palazzo was injured, spraining his MCL. Luckily, his return should take only around three weeks, and he is questionable for the team’s next games, at Carmichael Gym. Team Pack may struggle in his absence, but the team has enough pieces to make up for the loss.
“We are having a couple of returning players [this semester],” Palazzo said. “So just adjusting our lineups a little bit and getting comfortable and having chemistry with everyone that switches in and out. It’s really easy to get used to having one team and then have a couple of people move around and then it feels a little different. We just have to keep practicing so that we are used to each other enough to play with each other.”
Next up, Team Wolf and Team Pack will return to Carmichael Gym on Feb. 8-9, with entry free to NC State students. Afterwards, the team will play a tournament at Maryland University on Feb. 21-23, and then a possible trip to the University of Florida in March for the national championship, if the team makes it that far.
