Bill Cowher has been announced as a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s class of 2020. Cowher played linebacker for NC State from 1975-1978 before spending 6 years in the NFL. Cowher is the first former Wolfpack player to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame, with Torry Holt also up for consideration this year.

Cowher owns the record for most tackles in a single season for NC State with 195, and is tied for second-most tackles in a single game with two games at 24. Cowher is the seventh all-time in tackles with 371.

Cowher went undrafted, spending time playing for the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns before turning to coaching. Cowher worked his way up with the Browns and Kansas City Chiefs before taking the reins of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1992. Cowher posted a 149-90-1 record as a head coach, winning Super Bowl XL in 2006 and AP NFL Coach of the Year in 1992. His win total is 20th-best of all time. Cowher found out about the honor live on the air of CBS’ pregame show on Saturday.

“I don’t think it’s hit me yet,” Cowher said on CBS. “I mean, what can I say? I just think about the players. I just think about the Pittsburgh franchise and Dan Rooney when he hired me, he took a chance on a 34-year-old kid from Crafton, Pennsylvania, and my first goal was just to not get fired before my 20th high school class reunion.”
