NC State wrestling finished in a tie for fourth place with Michigan in the NCAA Championships, led by redshirt senior Michael Macchiavello who won the Pack’s only individual championship.
No. 1 redshirt freshman Hayden Hidlay was defeated by No. 3 Penn State’s Jason Nolf in the final of the 157 pound division. Nolf started the match with a single leg takedown to take a 2-0 score, Hidlay answered with an escape of his own. Nolf got a second takedown with just under 30 seconds to go in the first period. In the last two rounds neither wrestler could get much going offensively and the match ended 6-2 in favor of Nolf. This was Hidlay’s first loss of the season; he finished 26-1 in his freshman campaign.
No. 4 Macchiavello defeated No. 3 Jared Haught of Virginia Tech 3-1 in the final to win his first NCAA championship. After the first two periods Haught was up 1-0. At the start of the third period Macchiavello tied it up with an escape and with 12 seconds left Macchiavello got a takedown to secure his victory.
Redshirt freshman Tariq Wilson finished third in the 133 pound division after beating Scott Delvecchio of Rutgers 13-3 in the semis and then beat Luke Pletcher of Ohio State 17-8 in the finals of the consolation tournament.
Redshirt senior Kevin Jack would finish in sixth place after losing to Ohio State’s Joey McKenna 4-3 and 9-7 to Penn State’s Nick Lee to close out his NC State career with the second-most wins in school history at 114.
