NC State Gymnastics took first place at the EAGL Championships in Towson, Maryland Saturday. The team scored meet high 196.625, beating out second-place New Hampshire by .325 points.
The Wolfpack’s (18-8, 6-1 EAGL) score was the second-highest team score for the entire season. The only score higher was a 196.800 at its Tri-Meet against Ohio State and Central Michigan. The score is higher than the team’s average regional qualifying score of 195.767.
Even though it is the score that matters most, it is still impressive that the Pack outscored five other teams, including George Washington who is nationally ranked 19 compared to the Pack’s rank of 22.
Overall, the Pack scored well across the board. The team’s score for the vault was 49.225 and 49.025 for the bars. The team scored 49.100 for beams and on the floor, the team earned 49.275.
On the vault, sophomore Drew Grantham tied for first with two other gymnasts with an impressive score of 9.900. Both junior Alexa Phillips and senior Chelsea Knight tied for fourth with a score of 9.850.
On the bars, Knight placed third with a score of 9.875, being the only gymnast from NC State to place in the top five.
For the beams, Knight once again placed third with a high score of 9.900 and senior Nicole Wild followed close behind in fourth with her own score of 9.850.
Only one gymnast for the Pack placed in the top five on the floor. Phillips finished with 9.900, tying for fifth place.
Placing all-around were Knight and Grantham. They were the only two from the Pack to attempt all four individual events. Knight took first by .05 from senior Morgan Lane from North Carolina with a final score of 39.425. Grantham tied for fourth with senior Camille Drouin-Allaire from George Washington with a score of 39.200.
Knight and Grantham have consistently placed in the top five for all-around. Throughout the season, Knight has placed in the top five of the all-around nine times, placing first in five of them. Grantham has placed first twice out of the seven times she has placed in the top five.
The competition marked the Pack’s new vault score for both the team and Grantham. The team scored a high of 49.225 while Grantham scored a personal high on the vault, 9.900.
The gymnastics team will be hosting the NCAA Regional Championship at Reynolds Coliseum Saturday, April 7 at 2 p.m.
