The NC State men’s and women’s diving teams competed in the Zone B Championships in Knoxville, Tennessee this week. Sophomores James Brady and Madeline Kline both secured their spots in the NCAA Championships.
The Wolfpack men saw three of their four divers advance to the finals of the 3-meter dive on day one. Brady, freshman Holt Gray and junior Stewart Spanbauer all finished in the top 18. Brady’s mark of 711.55 saw him finish fourth, the second-best result of any ACC diver on 3-meter. Gray’s 652.55 landed him 15th, while Spanbauer finished at 18th with a score of 620.000. Senior Harrison Mitchell finished 19th in the prelims with a mark of 308.80 to just miss out on finals on day one.
Kline scored 518.85 in the final on 1-meter to finish 16th after just barely sneaking into the finals nabbing the last spot in the prelims.
Spanbauer and Brady were the only Wolfpack men who advanced to the final on the 1-meter board; Spanbauer took 15th with a score of 593.25, while Brady took 18th with a mark of 556.80. Gray and Mitchell finished 20th and 30th in the prelims, respectively. Kline, the only woman competing for the Wolfpack, finished 31st on the 3-meter board and did not qualify for the finals.
Brady’s score of 799.90 got him second and secured his spot at the NCAA Championships on platform. The platform was the only event all weekend that saw all five members of the Wolfpack qualify for finals. Spanbauer, Gray, and Mitchell all finished outside of the top 13 and did not qualify for the NCAA Championship.
On the women’s side, Kline punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships as she took seventh in the final of the platform event with a score of 488.80.
Kline and the women’s swim team will be competing in the NCAA Championships starting next Wednesday. Brady and the men’s swim team will start their championship on March 21 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
