A new student leader for NC State’s radio station has been selected for the 2018-2019 academic year. Jules Conlon, a fourth-year studying biological science, will be the next general manager of WKNC. Technician sat down to talk with Conlon about her experience and what she wishes to do in her position.
What has been your past experience in Student Media?
I joined WKNC the first week of my freshman year. I heard that there was an interest meeting to be a DJ during Wolfpack Welcome Week. I just showed up, and I have been there ever since. I also briefly worked for Technician my freshman year.
What made you want to apply for your leadership role within Student Media?
I felt like, since I had been there so long, I was progressively climbing up the ladder. I felt like I was going to be a good fit to lead WKNC just from how I have been involved with them in the past three years.
What do you wish to accomplish in your time in your position?
One big thing for me is to cultivate a strong and dedicated staff. We have had a ton of staff turnover in the past, and what I want is to create a team of people who are really committed to the radio station. I also want to get WKNC more involved in the community because we are obviously a part of NC State, but our biggest audience, statistically, is not NC State students. I would definitely like to see WKNC doing more in the community, but at the same time, encouraging student involvement since all the Student Media outlets are a student run.
