My name is Jonathan Carter and, for those of you who don’t know me, I’m your editor-in-chief. I have had the honor to serve as Technician’s editor for the last academic year and have been selected to continue my tenure throughout the 2018-2019 year.
When people ask me why I reapplied, I simply say that I don’t know what else I would do here. It’s true. Since I started at Technician in January 2016, I’ve been a news writer, an assistant news editor, the news editor and now the editor-in-chief. While those former positions were incredibly rewarding, I found that the office of editor-in-chief was where I belonged.
Being able to coordinate a staff that covers so many different platforms and areas of campus, having the opportunity to meet with fellow student and community leaders and seeing our content being consumed by members of our campus community every day has left me knowing that I’ve found the perfect position in our student newspaper.
Technician is making a big change for this volume. We’re going down to printing once a week. This is a decision we made to save resources that can be used to produce more, higher-quality content online and on social media. This was a decision we made knowing that content produced exclusively for our website and social media platforms is easier to access than the same content in a print newspaper. You can read more thoroughly about our decision here.
While Technician has made strides to cover groups and events that have not historically made it into our pages, we still have a lot of work to do when it comes to ensuring traditionally underrepresented groups get the coverage they deserve from their student newspaper.
Expanding our coverage to cover all parts of our campus community and improving our social media platforms are two major priorities of my final year as editor-in-chief. In the realm of social media, please follow us on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. We’ll work to regularly put content up on all three platforms.
As always, if you have any concerns or would like to chat with me about Technician or our mission, please send me an email at technician-editor@ncsu.edu. Until then, thanks for your continued support of student journalism and I’ll see you soon.
