The NC State softball team (22-25, 5-15 ACC) faced a difficult series against the Syracuse Orange last weekend. The Pack lost all three games to the Orange due to a lack of offensive production as it was only able to score one run out of all three games.
Sophomore infielder Haylee Kobziak scored the only run of the weekend for the Wolfpack when she sent a solo home run over the fence in the first inning of the first game. But Syracuse tied it in the third inning, and after two more runs in the same frame due to a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and bases-loaded single RBI, the game was all but over.
NC State had a scoring opportunity in the second game when sophomore outfielder Jade Caraway walked and later made it to third on a Syracuse error. After that, Kobziak singled to right and made it to second base. Unfortunately, a quick pair of strikeouts extinguished the threat and the Wolfpack wouldn’t sniff home plate for the rest of the game.
The third game also saw minimal opportunities for the Wolfpack until senior shortstop Alyssa Compton made it to third base in the seventh inning. But the Orange were already up 7-0 at that point, and still NC State could not finish and was shutout for the second game in a row.
Caraway continues to be one of the bright spots in a stagnant offense. She averages .262 but leads the team in runs with 31 and hits with 38. Caraway and some of the senior leaders on the team will have to step up their hitting performances with the competitive ACC Championship looming on May 9.
Sophomore pitcher Devin Wallace (11-13) took the loss for games one and three. Wallace performed well in game one, throwing her 13th complete game of the season and giving up four hits and three earned runs. Things got away from her in game three when she gave up four earned runs in the first inning and was relieved by senior pitcher Harli Hubbard in the second inning.
The Wolfpack will continue its season on Wednesday when it travels to Greenville, North Carolina, to take on East Carolina University.
