The No. 38 NC State women’s and the No. 22 men’s tennis teams competed in the ACC Championships this past weekend in Cary at the Cary Tennis Park.
The women’s team (17-13, 7-7 ACC) was the eight seed for the tournament and took on the nine seed, Clemson Tigers (13-13, 6-8 ACC) on day one after a first-round bye.
The Wolfpack and the Tigers met earlier in the season, where Clemson beat NC State 4-3. The Pack had the advantage in this matchup, winning 4-2.
Against the Tigers, the Pack started quickly by winning the No. 1 doubles matchup with sophomore Anna Rogers and junior Claudia Wiktorin. The No. 2 doubles match was also won by sophomore Adriana Reami and junior Amanda Rebol.
Freshman Taylor Bridges was also credited with a singles win for the Pack, which was her 10th ACC singles win of the year, setting a program record. Junior Bianca Moldovan and Wiktorin also clinched singles wins on day one.
The women took on No. 1 seed Duke (22-2, 13-1 ACC) in the semifinals and fell 5-0 despite Wiktorin and Rogers pushing the No. 1 doubles matchup to a tiebreaker and four of the singles matchups going to three sets. The women’s team finished the season 17-14 overall and 7-7 in the ACC.
The No. 22 men’s team (17-7) opened up the tournament taking on No. 39 Miami after a first-round bye on Thursday, winning 4-1.
The win was accomplished by claiming the doubles point with wins from junior brothers Igor and Ivan Saveljic and another win from sophomore Alexis Galarneau and redshirt junior Michael Ogden.
Singles wins came from Galarneau, the Saveljic brothers and freshman Robert Turzak.
With the win, NC State advanced to the ACC Quarterfinals against the nationally ranked, No. 6 UNC-Chapel Hill.
Against the Tar Heels, the men’s team lost 4-0, where the doubles point was lost, both in tiebreakers. Singles suffered the same fate as doubles, but with three straight-set losses.
The men’s team finished the season 17-8.
