Following an application and selection period, student leaders within NC State’s Student Media annual publications were appointed for the upcoming 2018-2019 academic year. Technician sat down and talked to the future student leaders of Windhover and Agromeck about their experience and what they wish to do in their position.
Xenna Smith, a first-year studying communication, editor-in-chief of Windhover
What has been your past experience in Student Media?
In high school, for almost my entire time there, I was part of my communication/journalism class. I was a leader through most of it. I was mostly in charge of our news broadcast, and I helped oversee the newspaper and online as well. Coming into college here, I was looking forward to doing Student Media because media is the career that I am following.
What made you want to apply for your leadership role within Student Media?
So I started this year as audio editor at Windhover because I am very much interested in music and media. I saw that the audio editor for Windhover was the perfect combination of both, and I did have prior experience in media. I applied for that job and got it. I had an amazing time working for Windhover and the people that are a part of it and getting the artists of NC State involved and published. I saw that the editor-in-chief position was open, and I thought that it would be the perfect opportunity to be able to utilize all of the ideas I was having in regard to doing what I could to help Windhover. I thought it would be an absolute honor to take on that role and work for a publication that is so well made and award winning.
What do you wish to accomplish in your time in your position?
I hope to bring more attention to the publication. We are probably the least known Student Media location on campus, and I would like for that to change. I would love it to be very popular, to increase artist submissions and for the overall volunteers and editors in staff that we have and make the best book that I can help make and hopefully win awards for it.
Katie Tart, a third-year studying business administration, editor-in-chief of Agromeck
What has been your past experience in Student Media?
Freshman year, I was just a regular staff designer for Agromeck. Then in my sophomore year, I was design editor for Agromeck, and now I am the editor-in-chief for Agromeck.
What made you want to apply for your leadership role within Student Media?
I was the editor of my high school yearbook. I have experience in working with a yearbook staff, and I just really liked it. It felt like the next progression to test myself leadershipwise and all the elements that go into a yearbook. Just testing myself and future business experience in management. It might be helpful to know how to manage a staff.
What do you wish to accomplish in your time in your position?
[I want to] increase the brand awareness of Agromeck and to increase our level of quality. We always produce a high-quality book but just continuing that. We have such a long history of winning awards. Just to keep with tradition, but I also want to expand on our own coverage and diversity that is on this campus.
Katie Tart, a second-year studying business administration and future editor-in-chief of Agromeck.
