The NC State men’s golf team finished in the middle of the pack of the ACC Championships Sunday, in eighth place, in New London, North Carolina, at the Old North State Club.
The Wolfpack shot a combined eight-under-par 280 on the final day of competition, which was the lowest team score in an ACC Championships round since 2004. However, NC State’s lowest three-round team score (846) since 2002 was not enough to finish in the top half of the conference.
Georgia Tech won the title with a three-round score of 835 (-29), while Clemson (837) and Wake Forest (838) trailed in second and third, respectively.
Throughout the weekend tournament, juniors Stephen Franken and Justin Hood carried the Pack on the links.
Franken shot his best round of the tourney, and the best among all NC State golfers, on the final day. After scoring a disappointing double bogey on the first hole, Franken bounced back and found himself at two-under-par after the first 10 holes. He then went on a streak of three straight birdies before bogeying the 17th and birdieing the 18th hole to finish with a 67 (-5) on the day.
Thanks to Franken’s first- and second-day scores of 69 (-3) and 70 (-2), he finished 10-under-par and tied for sixth place.
As for Hood, he was the Pack’s prime example of consistency. The St. Matthews, South Carolina native turned in a three-round score of 207 (-9), finishing one stroke behind Franken and tying for eighth place, thanks to three straight rounds of three-under-par 69s.
On Sunday, Hood was dialed in all afternoon; in fact, he surrendered just one stroke from a bogey and had four birdies for a three-under par.
