Freshman point guard Lavar Batts Jr. has been granted a release and will transfer from the NC State men’s basketball program.
The Concord, North Carolina, native averaged just 13.2 minutes per game with 3.7 points and 1.5 assists per game in the 2017-18 season. Batts did not get much playing time behind fellow freshman Braxton Beverly and sophomore Markell Johnson in head coach Kevin Keatts’ point guard rotation last year, with his minutes taking a dip particularly when Johnson returned to the lineup in mid January after a suspension stemming from a felonious assault charge in his hometown.
Despite Batts’ departure, NC State should be more than set at the point guard position next year with Johnson and Beverly returning, along with the addition of Missouri transfer Blake Harris, who will be eligible to play halfway through the season.
