The NC State baseball team lost to Florida State 6-3 in extra innings on Friday night at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida.
It was the second game in a row where the Wolfpack (39-14, 18-11 ACC) lost on a walk-off home run in extra innings. This one was a three-run home run in the 10th. NC State couldn’t get much offense going behind a good start from senior Brian Brown and the Seminoles (39-16, 16-12 ACC) got the clutch hit in the end.
Neither team could get anything going until NC State powered through in the fourth inning with solo home runs from sophomore shortstop Will Wilson and senior right fielder Brock Deatherage to take a 2-0 lead.
Brown cruised through five innings but ran into trouble in the sixth. With two outs and nobody on, Brown allowed a single, hit a batter and gave up a walk to load the bases. Redshirt junior Nolan Clenney replaced Brown.
Clenney was unable to strand the runners as he gave up back-to-back singles that surrendered three runs and Florida State took a 3-2 lead. Brown finished after 5.2 innings, gave up three runs on four hits and struck out six batters.
Freshman lefty Evan Justice came in for Clenney the next inning. Justice pitched two innings and didn’t surrender a run. The game entered the top of the ninth with the Seminoles leading 3-2.
With just one out left in the game, Deatherage tied it up with his second home run of the game and sent the game to extra innings tied at 3-3.
Graduate Johnny Piedmonte came in the game in the ninth inning, where he ran into a jam. With two men on and nobody out, Piedmonte got the next two batters to strike out and the third to line out to end the inning.
Unfortunately for the Pack, Piedmonte couldn’t get out of another Florida State rally in the tenth. NC State surrendered two base runners with one out after a walk and a single. Then, Reese Albert hit a three-run home run to end the game in heartbreaking fashion.
NC State looks to avoid the sweep on Saturday when it takes on Florida State in the finale at 1 p.m.
