Around noon Tuesday, Harnett County deputies found the body of an NC State student apparently shot in her home in Cameron, North Carolina.
Deputies found Jennifer Cantu, a nontraditional student studying biological sciences, dead while they were responding to a well-being check.
Cantu was 28 years old. Plemon J. Aker, 29, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, according to abc11. Harnett County deputies believe that Cantu and Aker were in a relationship. Aker is currently being held without bond.
According to a statement from NC State’s University Communications and Marketing via email, the University expressed its concern for Cantu and the Wolfpack community.
“We are saddened to learn of the death of a member of our campus community,” the statement said. “The University shares its deepest sympathies with her family and friends. As always, services at our Counseling Center are available for any who need assistance.”
The NC State Counseling Center is available to help students during the grieving process. Information about appointments can be found on the Counseling Center’s website. Students can also report concerns about their peer’s wellbeing through the NC State cares website.
