Two major student body officer positions only have one candidate filed each to run during the 2018 election. Molly Mueller and Jodi Svetaketu are the only candidates to apply for the positions of student body treasurer and student body chief justice, respectively. Both candidates spoke with Technician about their experience, their campaign and plans they hope to implement in their positions.
STUDENT BODY TREASURER
Molly Mueller, third-year studying political science and international studies
Experience: I started my freshman year as a senator. I came in as a first-year senator, ran again, and my sophomore year I served as a CHASS senator. I started out my junior year as a CHASS senator again and the appropriations chair and then during the special election in November, I ran for student body treasurer and won that position. I’m currently the student body treasurer.
You’re running uncontested for this position, are you still campaigning to let students know what you stand for and want to do in this position?
Yeah, so I’ll be going to a couple of different organized events on campus like through the honors quad, through the IRC to talk to students to let them know what’s going on, what I want to do, what I want to see change in the treasury and how they can get involved and how it will affect them.
What are some things you are looking to accomplish in this position?
One of the biggest things is transparency and just making everything more streamlined for students. I have just gone through the receipts process for the current appropriations cycle and I’ve been able to see where information is and where it isn’t in terms of what students are missing out on. It can be a very confusing process for students. I really want to streamline the process and put as much information out there as possible so they know ahead of time. That way we’ll have more student orgs that are eligible for appropriations, we’ll have less confusion, it’ll be easier for people to request money from finance, things like that.
STUDENT BODY CHIEF JUSTICE
Jodi Svetaketu, second-year studying English and Spanish
Experience: I have been a part of the conduct board for my two years here at NC State. This past year, along with being a board member, I’ve served as a hearing assistant and a chair for the Training Committee.
You’re running uncontested for this position, are you still campaigning to let students know what you stand for and want to do in this position?
I plan to go to meetings that are meant to introduce the candidates so that students can see my face, know my plans, but I haven’t done any official campaigning.
What are some things you are looking to accomplish in this position?
I think traditionally we usually only promote at Campus Connections and freshman orientation. I think there’s a lot more that we can do to not just get more members, but a more diverse range of members such as transfer students, international students, graduate students, if possible. I think an important step to doing that is reframing what the conduct board is about. It’s more than just hearing potential violations of the code and know the code of student conduct. We really learn how to ask relevant questions, how to not make assumptions when you’re looking at details and how to not let your personal bias cloud your judgement when you’re making a decision. I think that’s really what the conduct board is about and I think it would appeal to students that maybe wouldn’t have traditionally seen themselves as a part of Student Government.
