The NC State swimming and diving team competed this past weekend in the inaugural ACC/Big Ten challenge hosted by Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.
The event began on Saturday and saw seniors Andreas Vazaios and Jacob Molacek collect individual wins, each contributing a team-best nine points to the total score for the ACC men’s team.
The Wolfpack men, senior Justin Ress and junior Coleman Stewart, took part in the 400-yard medley relay in which they took home a gold medal. After the first day of competition, the Big Ten men were leading the ACC 85-82.
On day two, Vazaios and junior Coleman Stewart picked up first-place finishes. Stewart’s was in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 45.04. This win contributed to his 13-point total he had over the course of the two-day meet.
Vazaios finished the meet with 21 points for the ACC and collected a gold medal in the 200-yard individual medley. He reclaimed the best time in the nation in this event with a time of 1:42.44.
The Big Ten men snuck out of the two-day meet against the ACC with a 179-174 victory.
Freshman Emma Muzzy swam in her third collegiate meet Saturday as she took home the silver medal in the 400-yard individual medley and set a program record with a time of 4:05.60 in the event. Her swim was the fastest time in the ACC this season and the second-fastest in the country.
Senior Elise Haan had a productive weekend as she was a part of a first-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay for the ACC with a time of 3:28.30. She also placed fourth in 200-yard backstroke and third in the 100-yard backstroke.
The Big Ten women took care of business against the ACC, dominating them 251-102.
The diving portion of the meet saw juniors James Brady and Madeline Kline compete for the Pack. Brady collected a tenth-place finish on the three-meter boards the first day and a seventh-place finish during the platform dive event. Kline competed the first day and finished 10th on the platform dive with a score of 221.35.
The Wolfpack will return to action next weekend, traveling back to Indiana to compete in the IU Invitational at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington. This meet will run from Nov. 15 through Nov. 17.
