The Dorothea Dix Park is 308 acres in size, some of which is leased by the state for their administrative operations of the NC Department of Health and Human Services.
As the Master Plan for Dorothea Dix Park moves into its final stages, members of the Park’s advisory board and executive committee are looking for student feedback on the construction plans for the park across Western Boulevard.
Planning for the park kicked off at the end of 2017, and has included many meetings with design firms, the executive committee that includes Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane and Chancellor Randy Woodson, and community meetings.
Caroline Lindquist, planning specialist for the City of Raleigh focused in Dorothea Dix Park, focuses on community outreach and public input for the park. She also works with the design firm, specifically students.
Lindquist has been working with a group of Caldwell Fellows at NC State to get university students more involved in the park planning process and to get student feedback.
“Typically at community meetings we don’t get a lot of younger people showing up,” Lundquist said. “We want to offer a specific opportunity for that and not just for NC State students but for university students all in the Raleigh area.”
The fellows and Lindquist have been working to plan University Remix, an event that will be held on Nov. 16 in Downtown Raleigh, to get student input on the Master Plan for Dorothea Dix Park.
“We’ve met with [Student Government] representatives from surrounding universities and are hosting this event that will have the latest plans up for people to see,” Lindquist said. “We will be seeking feedback and we also will have music and performances by different universities.”
The two-year design process will wrap up in February 2019 and the Executive Committee will go to the City Council of Raleigh for approval.
