Let’s take a look at how former NC State football players are doing in the NFL as the season nears the halfway point.
Philip Rivers, quarterback, Los Angeles Chargers
Rivers and the Chargers headed across the pond to take on the Tennessee Titans in London in Week 7. Rivers completed 19 of his 26 pass attempts for 306 yards and two touchdowns. His first touchdown was a 75-yard bomb to Tyrell Williams while his second was a 55 yarder to Mike Williams. He now has 17 touchdowns to just three interceptions on the year, while throwing for 2,008 yards through seven games. The Chargers take a 5-2 record into the bye week and are just a game back of the Kansas City Chiefs for first place in the AFC West.
Bradley Chubb, linebacker, Denver Broncos
After just a sack and a half through his first five career games, Chubb has totaled five sacks in his last two, after a two-sack performance during a 45-10 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. He also had the first forced fumble of his career. Through seven games, Chubb is tied for the sixth-most sacks in NFL history by a rookie, and the season isn’t even halfway over.
The all-time record for sacks by a rookie, which Chubb is on pace to break, is 14.5 from Jevon Kearse which he set in 1999. Chubb is currently fourth in the league in sacks. The Broncos are 3-4 and have a big division matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs next week.
Nyheim Hines, running back, Indianapolis Colts
Hines carried the ball five times for 47 yards in a 37-5 win over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. He had one catch but lost five yards on the play. Hines now has 340 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns on the season. The Colts are 2-5 and travel to Oakland to face the Raiders next Sunday.
David Grinnage, tight end, Jacksonville Jaguars
Grinnage left NC State after the 2015 season, which was his redshirt junior campaign and has been on the Jaguars’ practice squad for over a year. In week six he played in his first career game and made his first catch. In week two, he made two catches for 17 yards. Grinnage has finally gotten an opportunity and seems to have made a little something out of it. We’ll see if he sticks on the roster the rest of the year.
Will Richardson, offensive tackle, Jacksonville Jaguars
Richardson was a fourth-round pick in the 2018 draft and hasn’t played in a game yet, although the Jaguars have high hopes for him in the future. He was placed on injured reserve this week after dealing with knee issues all year. He will come back in 2019 and look to compete for a starting spot.
Players whose teams were on bye:
Russell Wilson, quarterback, Seattle Seahawks
Jaylen Samuels, running back, Pittsburgh Steelers
Josh Jones, safety, Green Bay Packers
J.R. Sweezy, guard, Seattle Seahawks
