The NC State women’s soccer team lost 2-1 to No. 11 Virginia on Thursday night in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Junior midfielder Tziarra King scored the Pack’s only goal in the 78th minute after NC State was already down by two. However, the Pack couldn’t get out of the hole and was not able to tie the game up in the final moments.
It took until the second half for either team to find the back of the net. Just two minutes after halftime, Virginia converted off a corner kick that got by senior goalkeeper Sydney Wootten to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead.
The Pack allowed another goal in the 72nd minute off a blocked shot by Wootten that was rebounded and put back in by Virginia.
As time was running out for NC State to dig itself out of the 2-0 hole, King single-handedly found the back of the net and brought the Wolfpack within one. King dribbled through three defenders just outside the six-yard box before turning to hit the bottom left corner of the net.
Although there was a slight shift in momentum, NC State couldn’t capitalize in the final 10 minutes to tie the 11th-ranked team in the country.
Virginia outshot the Pack 20-4, showing the limited number of chances NC State had throughout the night and the constant pressure the Cavaliers were able to put on Wootten and the defense. NC State also failed to set up a corner kick, compared to eight by the home team.
Unfortunately for the Pack, the season was not enough to find a spot in the ACC Tournament, but it will await the NCAA Division I Selection Show that will take place on Nov. 5 to find out who it will match up against.
