Despite a valiant effort from sophomore goalkeeper Leon Krapf, the NC State men’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision on the road against Boston College Friday night.
The Wolfpack (6-3-2, 1-3-1 ACC) fell to 0-3 in road ACC games on the year, as the Eagles (3-3-3, 2-3-0 ACC) won for their first time in almost a month behind a game-winning goal from forward Simon Enstrom in the 61st minute. For the Wolfpack, Krapf shined with six saves, but it wasn’t enough for the Pack to break out of a three-game winless streak.
Boston College dominated the shot totals, getting off 10 shots and putting seven on target compared to just three shots, all off target, for the Wolfpack. The winning goal came off a corner kick for the Eagles, as Enstrom got his head to a low, in-swinging delivery.
Enstrom fought to win the fight to the ball, heading it off of an NC State defender and into the corner of the net. It was Enstrom’s seventh goal of the season, putting him two behind ACC leader Bruno Lapa of Wake Forest.
Before Enstrom’s winner, the Eagles outshot the Wolfpack 4-1 in a tightly contested opening half of play. Krapf came up with a couple of strong saves in the opening half, including a spectacular leaping stop to deny Enstrom of an opener in the 35th minute.
Enstrom turned and hit a clean volley in the penalty area, putting a knuckling ball on frame. Krapf made a great read on the shot, fully extending to barely push the ball over the crossbar and out of harm’s way.
The second half saw more of the same, with the Eagles putting shots on net and Krapf making big-time saves. However, the Pack couldn’t get anything going on the offensive side of the ball.
After starting the season 4-0, the Wolfpack has been able to pick up a win in just two of its last seven games. NC State will have another opportunity to get into the win column on the road Tuesday at Longwood, before returning home on Oct. 12 to host archrival UNC-Chapel Hill.
