The NC State men’s soccer team will host Boston College in the first round of the ACC Tournament Wednesday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.
The Pack (8-5-3, 2-4-2) finished eighth in the league, and the Eagles (4-7-4, 2-5-1) finished ninth. The tournament is set up so that the top four seeds get a bye, and the fifth through 12th place teams play to get to the quarterfinals. This will be the second year in a row the Pack has hosted its first-round game, losing to Virginia Tech in overtime last season.
Junior midfielder Gabriel Machado led the Wolfpack with four goals and 10 points in the regular season. Sophomore midfielder Brad Sweeney scored three goals. Sophomore forward David Loera also finished with 10 points during the regular season.
Sophomore goalie Leon Krapf played every minute in net for head coach George Kiefer’s team. He allowed 1.06 goals per game and had a 0.683 save percentage.
The highlight of the Wolfpack’s season was a victory over UNC-Chapel Hill, which was ranked No. 1 at the time and enters the ACC Tournament as the two seed. The Pack hasn’t won a game since that victory on Oct. 12.
The Eagles were led by Simon Enstrom with nine goals this year, good for fifth in the conference. He accounted for half of Boston College’s goals the whole season, and only one other player even scored two goals.
Antonio Chavez Borrelli was the primary goalkeeper and allowed 1.99 goals against, with a .637 save percentage. Joe Fryatt and Christian Garner also saw time in net.
The Wolfpack traveled to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts on Oct. 5 as the No.17 team in the country and fell 1-0. It was the last game of a four-game winless streak for NC State at the time.
This game is pretty simple. If Enstrom scores, Boston College will have a chance to win. If he doesn’t, NC State will feel really good about its chances.
The winner of this game will advance to face top seed Wake Forest on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 5 p.m.
NC State and Boston College will kick off at 7 p.m. at Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh. The game will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra.
