The Carolina Hurricanes took care of another piece of business to shape next season’s roster Thursday, as general manager Don Waddell announced that the team re-signed restricted free agent Trevor van Riemsdyk to a two-year deal worth $2.3 million per season.
In 79 games with the Hurricanes last season, van Riemsdyk put up three goals, a career-high 16 assists (matching his points career high at 19) and led the team in plus/minus at +9.
“Trevor was a steady presence on our blue line last season,” Waddell said in the team’s official release. “He’s shown progression each year of his NHL career, and is a well-liked player in our locker room.”
The Canes acquired van Riemsdyk in a trade with the Vegas Golden Knights for a second-round draft pick last summer. His signing makes it even more likely a defenseman will be dealt, as the Canes now have van Riemsdyk, Justin Faulk, Brett Pesce and Dougie Hamilton on the right side of their blue line, and Faulk’s name has been circulated in trade rumors all summer.
