While the NC State baseball season ended well over a month ago, many current members of the Wolfpack have continued playing baseball into the summer.
The metal bats have been traded into wood bats for a handful of NC State players; and for two, the red and white has been traded in for the red, white and blue. Here is a look at how the Pack has performed in the summer months:
Will Wilson, Sophomore, Shortstop
Wilson has spent his summer so far playing for the United States, making the final roster for a pair of series against Japan and Cuba for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team after impressing throughout early games with the team. Wilson appeared in three of the USA’s five games against Japan, going hitless in three at-bats.
In the four-game series in Cuba, Wilson started the finale, going one for four with a run scored. Apart from his time with team USA, Wilson is also listed on the roster of the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod Baseball League, a premiere college wood-bat league, but hasn’t played.
Patrick Bailey, Freshman, Catcher
Like Wilson, Bailey played the first part of his summer playing for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. While he didn’t make the roster for the Japan or Cuba series, Bailey did make appearances in games against Chinese Taipei and the Coastal Plain League Select Team. In his final game with the USA, Bailey went two for four with three RBIs against Chinese Taipei.
Since leaving team USA, Bailey has joined the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod League. In three games, Bailey is hitting three for eight with one home run and two RBIs.
Brad Debo, Sophomore, Catcher
Debo is playing for the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Harwich Mariners, along with NC State teammate Michael Bienlien, a sophomore pitcher. Debo is hitting .220, having compiled 11 hits in 50 at-bats during the 18 games he has played in.
Michael Bienlien, Sophomore, Pitcher
Bienlien is playing alongside Debo in Harwich and has made eight appearances for the Mariners. In 18.1 innings pitched, Bienlien has a 4.41 ERA, allowing 14 hits and eight walks, while striking out 13 batters.
Mathieu Gauthier, Sophomore, Pitcher
The last of the Wolfpack’s Cape Cod participants, Gauthier is pitching for the Cotuit Kettleers. Statistics for the Kettleers are incomplete, and Gauthier has no listed appearances, but has pitched for the Kettleers on a few occasions according to the team’s Twitter account.
J.T. Jarrett, Freshman, Infielder
Jarrett has made eight appearances for the Holly Springs Salamanders of the Coastal Plain League this summer, and has hit .348 with four RBIs in those appearances. He hasn’t played for the Salamanders since July 1, but is still listed on the official roster.
Terrell Tatum, Freshman, Outfielder
Like Jarrett, Tatum has played sparingly for the Holly Springs Salamanders during the summer. In five games in the Coastal Plain League, Tatum collected just one hit in 18 at-bats, striking out nine times for an .056 batting average.
Nick Swiney, Freshman, Pitcher
Swiney has played for two different teams in the Coastal Plain League, starting his summer with Holly Springs and recently joining the roster of the Gastonia Grizzlies. In three games with the Salamanders, Swiney allowed one earned run while striking out 10 batters over five innings of work. He made his debut for Gastonia on July 15, striking out 10 batters over five innings, allowing just three runs and three hits in a strong start.
David Harrison, Freshman, Pitcher
The last of the Pack’s Coastal Plain League participants, Harrison has started five games for the Wilson Tobs. Harrison has struggled mightily this summer, holding an 0-3 record and 7.04 ERA. Harrison has allowed 23 hits and 18 walks in his 23 innings of work.
Brady Gulakowski, Redshirt freshman, Catcher
Gulakowski didn’t get much action for the Wolfpack last season, but is playing his summer ball with the Thunder Bay Border Cats of the Northwoods League. Gulakowski is batting .243 and has slugged three home runs to go along with 21 RBIs.
Evan Justice, Freshman, Pitcher
Justice is playing for the Charlottesville Tom Sox of the Valley Baseball League this summer after earning three starts for the Wolfpack in his freshman season. Justice has made a number of appearances out of the bullpen for the Tom Sox.
