During their meeting Wednesday evening, student Senators welcomed the newly elected Senators, elected Student Senate officers and voted to approve three bills during the second reading of legislation.
Mike Giancola, assistant vice provost and Student Ombudsperson from NC State Student Ombuds Services, spoke to Senate about their services on campus for students, which include the Student Emergency Fund and Pack Essentials.
Student Senate President Adam Schmidt, a third-year studying civil engineering, said that the applications for open Senate seats that were not filled during the election are officially live. Schmidt said that he hopes to make appointments by the next Senate meeting on Oct. 11.
Senators elected to seats from the fall election were sworn into office during the meeting. The Senate also elected Student Senate Officers. All officers were re-elected without competing nominations or debate.
Senate President Pro Tempore: Senator Senator James Withrow, a graduate student studying entomology, representing Graduate and Lifelong Education.
Legislative Secretary: Senator Coleman Simpson, a fourth-year studying agricultural science, representing the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
Secretary: Senator Sophie Holmes, a second-year studying engineering, representing the College of Engineering.
Sergeant-at-Arms: Senator Dominic Rodts, a second-year studying mechanical engineering, representing the College of Engineering.
During the first reading of legislation, the Student Senate voted for Bill R27, the Academic Calendar Communication Act, to *go to the Committee on Academics. Bill FB28, the Menstrual Cup Act, was voted to fast-track to second reading of legislation.
The bill, which allocates $2000 from the Finance line to Period @ NC State to purchase menstrual cups, was fast-tracked to second reading of legislation because the organization has an event coming up next week. The bill was passed.
Bill FB26, the Surplus Act, was also passed, which will allocate 60 percent of the remaining unspent funds from the 2017-18 fiscal year to appropriations and 40 percent to the Student Government Finance Committee.
The Fall 2018 Appropriations Act was also passed with an added amendment. Student Government Appropriations Committee allocated $72,666.17 to over 200 student organizations on campus.
The next Student Senate meeting will be on October 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Student Senate Chambers of Talley Student Union.
