After a long day of classes, many students want to find a way to de-stress. The Game Club at NC State is a place where students can enjoy themselves while playing great games in the company of other students.
The club was founded in order to create a place where every student can enjoy playing games with others. The club plays a variety of games, ranging from board games to card games. Lukas Morris, a third-year studying zoology and the secretary of the Game Club, spoke about why he chose to become an officer.
“I became secretary [of Game Club] because I found a lot of enjoyment in our club and wanted to reach out to others so they could participate in ur fun activities as well, especially after a long week of classes,” Morris said. “You know, as they say, the more the merrier.”
The atmosphere is a big part of successful clubs because it makes students want to join a club. In the Game Club, the relaxed atmosphere provides a way for students to meet others through playing a friendly board game. Students who enjoy the heat of the competition can come to the Game Club and get that experience through playing games with others.
“Outside of the games, my favorite part of Game Club has to be the charged yet relaxed atmosphere of the club,” Morris said. “People get caught up in the heat of the game and often put in their best efforts, but regardless of winning or losing, everyone seems to have a great time and feel less stressed by the end of the meeting. I think this atmosphere really helps members make connections with one another.”
Mariska Thayagan, a third-year studying microbiology and the president of the club, spoke about her favorite part of the club.
“My favorite part of Game Club is that the people around me every meeting are really close, and I feel I can be comfortable just being myself. I don’t have to put on a mask for anyone there,” Thayagan said.
Game Club also gives a way for students to relax and take part in something they like to do. Whether it’s their love for games or the sharing of their hobbies with other students in the club, the club allows people to open up to others and have fun.
The Game Club also provides leadership positions to students who are interested in being a part of the process that helps the Game Club to organize meetings throughout the year.
“I became president of Game Club because my friends and I thought it would be best that I plan stuff and since I filled out the registration forms,” Thayagan said.
The Game Club is the place where you can find your favorite game, whether it is a tabletop game or a dice game. Many students can enjoy their time here and de-stress by playing their favorite games, whether it is for fun or for friendly competition.
Morris spoke about his favorite game to play during club meetings.
“Oh, that’s a hard one,” Morris said. “If I had to choose one, I’d say it’s Betrayal at House on the Hill. It’s a very strategic game and calls for collaboration among teammates, which helps bring us closer together as both players and friends.”
Thayagan also spoke about her favorite game to play with the club.
“My favorite game would be Werewolf, because everyone gets really relaxed and comfortable with one another while playing,” Thayagan said.
Game Club’s next meeting will be held this Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. in Mann Hall’s room 304. For more information about Game Club and their upcoming meetings, contact Lukas Morris at kpmorris@ncsu.edu.
