Laura Kowohl ties for 19th at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship at the Cherokee Country Club on Sept. 18, 2017. Hosted by Tennessee, NC State finished in 10th place in its second round.
The NC State women’s golf team placed 11th out of 19 teams in its first golf tournament of the 2018-19 season. However, the Cougar Classic cut the final round at Yeamans Hall in Hanahan, South Carolina due to impending weather from Hurricane Florence.
In the second and final round, the Pack combined for a 6-over-par 294, good for 584 (+8) on the weekend.
Junior Laura Kowohl kicked off her year successfully, carding a 4-under-par 140 which placed her in a tie for 15th. This marked her third-consecutive top-20 finish and seventh of her career in Raleigh.
Fellow junior Naomi Ko posted 73’s in both rounds for a tie for 36th while freshman Monika Hartl and junior India Clyburn both shot a 150 to finish in a tie for 64th place. Clyburn was often the Pack’s top performer in her sophomore season, but got off to a sluggish start with two 75’s in her first appearance of the year.
Sophomore Mim Sangkapong couldn’t find her groove in the first round either, shooting a 79 (+7), but the Nonthaburi, Thailand native finished the weekend with a second round score of a 75.
NC State’s next scheduled tournament is the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate in Knoxville, Tennessee on Monday, but due to severe conditions of Hurricane Florence the Wolfpack has withdrawn from the competition. Therefore, the Pack takes a month break before returning to Chapel Hill for the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational on Oct. 12-14.
