No. 21 NC State women’s soccer tied No. 15 Duke 1-1 on Thursday night at Dail Soccer Stadium after weather delayed the game two hours from its start time.
The Wolfpack’s (8-2-2, 1-1-1 ACC) only goal came junior midfielder Tziarra King in the 82nd minute to even out the game after the Blue Devils (8-2-2, 2-1-1 ACC) took a 1-0 lead just five minutes before.
Originally, the match was supposed to start at 7 p.m., but due to bad weather in the Raleigh area, it didn’t start until 9:15 p.m.
The first half went scoreless with Duke getting most of the opportunities, but being unsuccessful in finding the back of the net. NC State couldn’t get much of anything going, developing just one shot in the first half, compared to seven shots by Duke.
After the half, senior defender Ella Bonner was issued a red card and was removed from the game, weakening the back line for the Pack for the remainder of the game.
The Blue Devils scored the first goal of the game in the 77th minute when Duke’s Kayla McCoy found the net after receiving a pass inside the six-foot box to put Duke up 1-0.
With how the game was going, it was improbable the NC State would be able to come back to even the score. Duke had been in control for most of the game, limiting any chances the Pack had to score.
However, just five minutes later, King put a strike into the back of the net from long distance to equal out the score. King’s seventh goal of the season was assisted by senior defender Hannah Keogh, her fourth assist of the year.
Neither team could capitalize on their chances to win late in the game. Duke had six shots and three corner kicks in overtime, but the game remained tied. Senior goalie Sydney Wootten finished with seven saves and just the one goal allowed.
Duke dominated in almost every category except for the score. NC State had just three shots the whole game, while the Blue Devils had 20 of those opportunities. In the same way, Duke had six corners, compared to the Pack, which did not attempt a corner kick the whole game. With all that said, the Pack was able to get the tie against a good Duke team.
NC State women’s soccer will be back on the field in South Bend, Indiana on Sunday to take on Notre Dame at 1 p.m.
