The controversial ‘Silent Sam’ confederate statue was torn down by protesters at the the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Monday evening.
The monument fell around 9:15 p.m., according to The News & Observer, after protesters worked to cover the statue in ropes concealed by banners to topple the statue.
The march calling for the removal of the statue began around 7 p.m. and, according to WRAL, more than 300 protestors arrived at the Peace and Justice Plaza before marching to the statue. After gathering at the base of the statue, protesters marched down Franklin Street and back again.
Silent Sam was a statue of a confederate soldier and what many viewed as a symbol for racial oppression. It has been the center of several protests, which have included the statue being vandalized multiple times, for years.
A livestream video of the protest can be found on The Daily Tar Heel’s Facebook page.
