The No. 13 NC State rifle team performed well in West Point, N.Y., picking up three wins and recording just one loss to No. 3 Kentucky despite the Pack tying a program-best aggregate score.
Graduate student Lauren Phillips led the way for the Wolfpack, firing a 588 in smallbore and finishing second individually. Her aggregate score of 1182 was a career best, as she finished second overall individually in the event.
Sophomore Kendra Jacobs turned in an impressive performance of her own, firing 582 in smallbore and finishing third in the event. She also scored a career-high 596 in air rifle Sunday, finishing second.
The Wolfpack improved to 10-5 on the year with a 3-3 mark in the Great American Rifle Conference. The Pack faced off against the United States Coast Guard Academy, Kentucky and No. 11 Army over the two-day event.
On Sunday, the Wolfpack squared off against the United States Coast Guard and Kentucky. NC State logged a season-best score of 2319 in the smallbore competition, but was still topped by the Wildcats’ score of 2321.
In the air rifle section, the Wolfpack again fell to Kentucky 2368-2354; the Wolfpack finished behind Kentucky and recorded a GARC loss, but still tied a program-high aggregate score of 4673, while Coast Guard ended with an aggregate showing of 4515 to finish behind both NC State and Kentucky.
On Monday, the Pack faced off against Coast Guard and Army. The Pack again saw stellar performances from Phillips and Jacobs: Jacobs finished first overall individually in smallbore with a score of 589, a personal-best, and Phillips landed in second by logging a smallbore score of 585.
NC State notched a score of 2315 in smallbore and 2348 in air rifle for an aggregate score of 4663 to take down Army and Coast Guard and pick up two wins. Army fired 2292 in the smallbore portion while logging a 2340 in air rifle. The Black Knights finished with an aggregate score of 4632 and Coast Guard ended with an aggregate of 4521.
Jacobs and Phillips finished first and second, respectively, individually in aggregate. Jacobs earned a career-high 1180 while Phillips fired a 1179. Junior Claire Spina had a solid outing, finishing with a 587 in air rifle en route to a career-best 1152 in the aggregate.
Thanks to strong outings from the Pack, NC State vanquished Army and picked up its third GARC win of the year.
NC State will travel to Annapolis, Maryland where it will take on No. 9 Nebraska on Saturday and Navy on Sunday. The two matches will be an important test for the Wolfpack, as it has the opportunity to pick up two more conference wins.
