This weekend, the NC State Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams ventured up to Lexington, Virginia to compete at the Virginia Keydet Invitational. The meet featured a total of 17 different programs.
Teams in attendance included ECU, UNC-Charlotte, George Mason University and ACC rival Virginia Tech. However, the Wolfpack dominated. The women finished second with a total of 99 points; while the men earned first place; tallying 112.5 points.
On the women’s side, the team was led by another stellar performance from junior Gabriele Cunningham. Continuing her stellar form from last weekend, the Charlotte native took second place in both the 60-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash.
Cunningham’s 60m hurdles prelim time of 8.18 seconds moves her up to second all time in the NC State record books.
Accompanying Cunningham on the podium was redshirt junior Megan Rempel who earned a silver medal in the 1000-meter. Her mark of 2:53.49 also moves her up to fourth on the NC State top 10 list.
In the mile run, the Pack saw similar success with redshirt freshman Dominique Clairmonte earning third place with a swift mark of 4:49.12.
The success on the track was mirrored in the field. Redshirt junior Lauren Evans brought home silver in both the weight throw and shot put; producing throws of 50’4.50” and 62’9.5” respectively.
In the jong jump, sophomore Lauren White helped the Wolfpack garner another podium finish with her third place finish in the long jump. White’s mark of 18’10.5” was a personal record as well.
On the men’s side, the sprint crew lead the way. In the 60m, sophomores Cravont Charleston and Dylan Peebles took second and third respectively clocking in at 6.76 and 6.82.
In the 200-meter, the Wolfpack dominated the race, recording three of the top four finishes.
Dylan Peebles won the event in a blazing time of 21.12 seconds. This mark moves him up to third on the NC State all time list in that event. Accompanying Peebles in the 200m was senior Shannon Patterson and Cravont Charleston. With marks of 21.29 and 21.47; the duo placed third and fourth respectively.
Shannon Patterson, Dylan Peebles, sophomore Sam Krehnbrink and senior Abdur Rahmaan Kelly closed out the sprints in style; finishing second in the 4×4 in a swift mark of 3:15.64.
This momentum from the sprint events translated over to the mid distance as well.
In the 1000m, the Pack dominated the race. Redshirt freshman Tim Bason brought home gold in a mark of 2:28.11. Following Bason was a pack consisting of redshirt sophomore Tanis Baldwin, redshirt freshman Joe Bistritz, redshirt junior Jack Hagood, junior Philip Hall and sophomore Gavin Gaynor. The quintet of runners finished third through seventh respectively.
In the field, the Pack continued to prosper. Redshirt sophomore Tyson Fortenberry earned bronze honors in both weight throw and shot put; providing performances of 55’9.25” and 54’8.25” respectively.
Meanwhile, true freshman Von Douglas had a breakout performance in the long jump, taking the event with an impressive leap of 24’3.75. This mark bested Douglas’ previous personal record by over a foot.
In total, seven Pack athletes produced performances that qualified for the ACC conference meet; while 10 set personal records.
Next, the Pack will travel to Clemson, South Carolina to compete at the Bob Pollock Invitational on Jan. 26-27.
