After trailing the majority of the game, the NC State men’s basketball team overcame a 15-point first half deficit to defeat Pitt 72-68 Wednesday night at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The Wolfpack (14-7, 4-4 ACC) rallied in the final minutes of the game when the Panthers (8-13, 0-8 ACC) went on a scoring drought after shooting 8 of 15 from behind the arc in the first half.
The Pack jumped to an early 17-6 lead in the first half before early foul trouble plagued the Pack. Sophomore center Omer Yurtseven, senior forward Abdul-Malik Abu and freshman point guard Braxton Beverly all were called for 2 fouls within the first 10 minutes of the contest. At the half, the Wolfpack trailed 43-33.
The Pack did not close the gap until junior guard Torin Dorn contributed 6 consecutive points with under eight minutes to play, cutting the Pitt lead to 62-57. Dorn finished with 12 points and nine rebounds in the contest.
Yurtseven led the Pack with 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting in 27 minutes. Graduate guard Allerik Freeman was second on the team in scoring with 13 points and five rebounds.
State ended the game on a 15-2 run, highlighted by a three from Beverly to give State a 68-66 lead. Dorn hit a jumper and Freeman hit two free throws to seal the game.
The Pack tallied eight steals to the Panthers three and State outrebounded Pitt 42-34. On the night, the Pack was 15 of 15 from the charity stripe.
Junior guard Jared Wilson-Frame of Pitt led the Panthers with 22 points on 50 percent shooting. Freshman guard Shamiel Stevenson chipped in 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting and six rebounds.
The win over Pittsburgh was the first ACC road win this season for the Pack and the first road win of the Keatts coaching era.
NC State travels to the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill Saturday to take on rival UNC-Chapel Hill. Tip-off is set for noon and the game can be seen on CBS.
