In its first action of the spring season, the NC State women’s tennis team dropped contests to No. 16 UCLA and No. 21 Kentucky in the ITA Kick Off Weekend in Lexington, Kentucky.
The Wolfpack struggled during singles action, winning just one match all weekend, but was more successful on the doubles side, winning three matches total during the tournament.
On Friday, junior Claudia Wiktorin and sophomore Anna Rogers impressed despite the team result. The ninth-ranked duo defeated UCLA’s seventh-ranked doubles pair Jada Hart and Ena Shibahara by a score of 6-2. NC State’s doubles pair of junior Amanda Rebol and sophomore Adriana Reami dropped their doubles match 7-6. Junior Bianca Moldovan and freshman Helene Grimm also dropped their match in the doubles competition.
The Wolfpack struggled on the singles side as Rogers, Grimm and Wiktorin dropped matches to the Bruins. Ultimately, the Pack fell to UCLA 4-0.
On Saturday, State squared off against No. 21 Kentucky in the consolation round of the tournament. The Wolfpack found a bit more success in this contest, but still came up short as the Wildcats prevailed, 4-2.
After an impressive win the previous day, Wiktorin and Rogers fell in their doubles bout by a score of 6-3. Reami and Rebol rebounded from their doubles loss to the Bruins, winning their match against Justina Mikulskyte and Lesedi Jacobs 6-4 Saturday. Moldovan and Grimm also won their doubles match, defeating Kentucky’s Diana Tkachenko and Brianna Tulloch 6-3.
Moldovan secured the lone singles win for the Pack against the Wildcats, defeating Tulloch 6-3, 6-3. Rogers narrowly fell to Mikulskyte and Reami, Grimm and Wiktorin dropped their singles matches as well.
The Pack will look to bounce back when it travels to Kansas to take on Wichita State on Friday at 4 p.m.
