Apple is expected to publish the location of a new headquarters as soon as this week, and Raleigh is still in the running as a site of choice for the multi-billion-dollar corporation.
Despite the lack of an official timeline for their decision, Apple is expected to make a statement in the near future on the whereabouts of the new site. In January, the company announced its plans to build a corporate campus, spurring promises of jobs and development for whatever locality is chosen.
The News and Observer reported that Apple CEO Tim Cook met with Gov. Roy Cooper on May 11 regarding a campus in Research Triangle Park. This news came around the same time that the General Assembly passed new legislation pertaining to an upcoming “major jobs announcement.” Lawmakers declined to specify the company in mind, but have said that the company would need to create at least 3,000 jobs to qualify.
Amazon has also not ruled out Raleigh as a location for its new HQ2, but this project is not likely to be placed in RTP. According to a report by ABC11, Amazon has said it will require 8 million square feet of space for offices in the new complex, which leaves downtown Raleigh as a possible option. Apple’s development will reportedly not be nearly as large or expensive as Amazon’s project.
If Apple does decide to locate in Raleigh, the move is expected to bring more people and jobs. Spokespeople for Apple have declined to comment as nothing has yet been finalized. Technician will provide updates as this story develops.
