NC State women’s basketball defeated Chattanooga 78-58 on head coach Wes Moore’s old stomping grounds to stay a perfect 12-0 on the young season.
The Wolfpack had control of the game for all four quarters against the Mocs (4-9). In the first two quarters, the Pack outscored Chattanooga by 14 to end the half 45-31. Although the Pack didn’t score as high in the second half, the team never gave up the lead. The victory was the 900th in program history for the Wolfpack.
Graduate guard Kiara Leslie opened up the game with a layup that led to a 9-0 start for the Wolfpack.
The leading scorers of the game were freshman center Elissa Cunane with 19 points followed by redshirt junior guard Grace Hunter who scored 17 points. Leslie managed to rack up 12 points.
All three had a good shooting night with Hunter being 7 of 7 from the free throw line and Cunane shot 7 for 9 on field goals while she knocked down 5 of 6 free throws. Leslie was shot 1 of 3 from behind the arc but converted on 4 of 7 shots in the field and 3 of 4 from the foul line.
Junior guard Aislinn Konig had a slower night but still sunk two 3-pointers and had four assists.
Overall, the team had a successful night, shooting 85 percent from the free throw line and nearly 50 percent from the floor. Even though the team shot only 26.7 percent from deep, the Pack didn’t need to rely on 3-pointers to get the win.
The team ran an efficient offense as it kept the turnovers to a season-low 11 and had 11 points off of fast breaks. It also kept up with its rebounding, accumulating 45 total rebounds compared to the Mocs’ 23.
Sophomore Kayla Jones and Leslie led the team with eight rebounds apiece. Jones had an even four and four rebounding while Leslie dominated defensive rebounds with a total of seven and only one offensive rebound.
Down low in the paint, the Pack faced a little trouble when junior Erika Cassell and Cunane got themselves into foul trouble, with each picking up four fouls. Cassell had two fouls called during the second quarter. In the third quarter, Cunane was charged with two more fouls.
During the fourth quarter, the Pack had a 25-point lead against the Mocs 78-53.
