The undefeated NC State wrestling team will face Appalachian State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in at Reynolds Coliseum.
NC State is currently ranked at No. 7 in the country after a top-5 finish in last year’s NCAA Championships. Momentum has carried over to the new season as the Pack started 4-0 while the Mountaineers bring a 2-3 record into Raleigh.
Head coach Pat Popolizio and his squad are coming off a close 16-15 victory against Old Dominion in Norfolk, Virginia after blowing out their first three opponents. The Pack defeated Davidson, Reinhardt and UNC Pembroke by a combined score of 126-12.
Against Old Dominion, each team won five bouts, the deciding point coming in the 133-pound weight class as redshirt sophomore Tariq Wilson’s major decision pushed the Pack ahead. Wilson is ranked at No. 4 in his weight class.
Appalachian State has lost its last two matchups against No. 15 UNC-Chapel Hill and Ohio, both at home. It also lost an early-season match against No. 15 Rutgers. The Mountaineers have convincing wins against Sacred Heart and Ithaca.
The Pack matched up with the Mountaineers in December of last year, dominating them 34-3 in Boone during the historic 2017-2018 season. Despite losing a couple wrestlers from last year’s squad, the Pack should handle Appalachian State with little problem.
NC State has five ranked wrestlers at their respective weight classes. Led by Wilson and redshirt sophomore Hayden Hidlay, the Pack will not face any ranked wrestlers on the side of Appalachian State.
