After dropping its previous series to conference foe Boston College, the Wolfpack was able to end its five game losing streak in the double header against UNC Charlotte in 8-0 and 7-2 matchups. This win also gets the Pack’s record back to .500 at 17-17.
In the first game of the double header, freshman Kayla Cox picked up the win on the mound. She kept the 49ers without a run and gave up only three hits in five innings. By the end of the second inning, the Pack had built up its lead to 4-0 off of two RBIs from freshman Chelsea Tate and senior Alyssa Ishibashi. Sophomore Catlin Dent extended the lead to 6-0 with her first home run of the 2011 season.
“It feels great,” Cox said. “I feel like we’re coming together and clicking. These two games our offense has been on point.”
In the second game of the afternoon, junior designated player Bethaney Wells was able to get the ball off the bat. She put the Pack on the board 1-0 in the first inning with an RBI to bring junior Landon Warren home. In the second inning, junior Toni Ann Wilford brought two runs in to push the lead to 3-0. Morgan Peeler picked up the win in the second game on the mound without giving up an earned run.
“It felt great, especially because of coach Navas’ 600th win,” Peeler said. “We had great run support. Also, the way we did it was great. Kayla and I did a great job on the mound.”
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Tate got her first home run of the season to increase the Wolfpack’s lead to 6-1.
The game concluded with a team celebration of coach Lisa Navas’ 600th win. Immediately after the game concluded, the team attempted to give Navas a Gatorade bath, but she was able to show off her athleticism by running off the field.
“We’ve been working on that for a while, we were just waiting for the opportunity to go through with it,” Wells said. “It was fun and everyone had a great time doing it.”
The Pack will return to action in the Kay Yow Pink Game against rival North Carolina on April 9 at 1 p.m. at Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium.
