With the entire team on his back this spring, the last thing redshirt junior Mike Glennon needed was for Russell Wilson to return to the team, potentially returning him to the bench.
But with coach Tom O’brien’s announcement today that Wilson will not be coming back for another season, Glennon’s future just became a lot more clear.
“Russell and I have had very open conversations about his responsibilities respective to baseball and football,”said O’Brien. “While I am certainly respectful of Russell’s dedication to baseball these last several years, within those discussions I also communicated to him the importance of his time commitment to NC State Football.”
O’brien also gave some parting words to Wilson during the announcement.
“My staff and I thank him for his contributions as a member of Wolfpack football and to this University and wish him only the best in the future,” O’brien said.
Wilson will be leaving the school to focus on his baseball career with the Asheville Tourists, a minor league affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.
While he will be playing with the Tourists in the summer, Wilson did not leave out the possibility of playing college football in the future.
“While my immediate plan includes playing professional baseball, I have not closed the door on football,” Wilson said. “With one more season of college eligibility remaining, I will continue to explore and consider all my options.”
Wilson also said that he is leaving because it is in the best interest of the team for them to move on without him.
“It has become apparent that the time has come for the program to move on without me,” Wilson said.
N.C. State fans can now look forward to a heavy dose of Glennon for the next couple of seasons, and hope that he will do as well as Wilson did over his three year tenure with the team.
While Wilson announced that he would be moving on without the Wolfpack, he, much like O’brien, had some parting words for the University.
“I am forever grateful to NC State for allowing me the privilege of participating in athletics for four years,” Wilson said. “I especially appreciate the cooperation among coaches who allowed me to pursue my dream of playing two sports. I also want to thank the great fans of NC State University. Your love and support was a gift that I appreciated every day and will treasure my entire life.”
