Paul Nolan and Brayndon Stafford won the runoff election Thursday with 55.97 percent of the votes, beating out Cody Long and Mitchell Moravec for the positions of student body president and vice president for the 2016-2017 academic year.
Jamie Plummer won student senate president with 50.05 percent of the vote. Nute Thompson came in a close second with 49.94 percent of the vote.
Because no candidate running for student body president and vice president or student senate president received at least 40 percent of the vote during the first election, Student Government conducted a runoff Thursday to determine the winners.
Long and Moravec received the most votes in the initial election, with 13 votes more than Nolan and Stafford. However, Nolan and Stafford pulled a win during the runoff election. Long and Moravec lost with 44.02 percent of the votes.
“I needed to call my mother,” said Nolan, student body president-elect and a junior studying materials science and engineering.
Nolan and Stafford expressed their thanks to all of those who helped them along the way.
“I want to thank most importantly every student of NC State that actually came out and voted,” Nolan said. “I’m excited for NC State.”
Stafford, student body vice president-elect and a junior studying environmental sciences, expressed how grateful he was for this opportunity and how much he owes the student body.
“I want to thank my lord and savior Jesus Christ and God for granting me this opportunity,” Stafford said. “Honestly, it’s just such a blessing to have been able to run and even more of a blessing to have won. Thank you.”
Neither Long nor Moravec were able to attend the reveal.
Long was traveling to Morocco with the University Scholars Program while Moravec was awaiting a flight to Alaska for an Alternative Service Break program.
O’licia Parker-Smith, a sophomore studying communication and a staffer for the Long/Moravec campaign, said their campaign was well fought and well executed.
“We ran a really good campaign, and there was a lot of passion behind it,” Parker-Smith said. “We did what we could, and we did our best.”
Parker-Smith said she was thankful to have been able to work with Long and Moravec.
“I want to thank Cody and Mitchell for allowing me to work with them,” Parker-Smith said. “I’d also like to congratulate Nolan and Stafford on their well-fought campaign.”
Jamie Plummer, the student senate president-elect and a junior studying polymer and color chemistry, also expressed her thanks and said she is looking forward to her tenure.
“People were very receptive of what I had to say, and I am very thankful and appreciative of that,” Plummer said.
Nolan and Stafford said they are thankful to Long and Moravec for all that they do for the community.
“I’d love to thank Cody and Mitchell for a great campaign and we are very much looking forward to working with them next year,” Stafford said.
“This is not a victory for Paul Nolan or Brayndon Stafford — this is a victory for NC State,” Nolan said.
