Sophomores Cody and Caleb Martin of the NC State men’s basketball team have decided to transfer from the program, NC State Athletics announced earlier today.
“Caleb and Cody have informed me of their desire to explore options that they believe are in both of their best interest,” NC State head coach Mark Gottfried said in a statement released by NC State Athletics. “While I don’t share all of their views, I have certainly come to understand and respect the unique dynamic and special bond that exists between identical twins. I enjoyed coaching them over the past two years.
The Martin twins appeared in 66 games for the Wolfpack over their two seasons in Raleigh, combining to start 35 of those games. Cody Martin averaged 6.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists for the Pack this season while Caleb averaged 11.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.
“We wanted to say thank you to [Wolfpack Nation] and all of the great memories that will be with us forever,” Caleb Martin said in a statement released by NC State Athletics. “But we think it is best for us to move on.”
Coupled with the departure of 2015-16 First Team All-ACC member Cat Barber to the NBA Draft, the Pack will lose three key contributors to a team that finished 16-17 overall this season including 5-13 in ACC play.
As of right now, the Pack will return freshmen Maverick Rowan and Shaun Kirk, sophomore Abdul-Malik Abu and juniors BeeJay Anya and Lennard Freeman for the start of next season.
Meanwhile, NC State welcomes highly-touted recruit Dennis Smith Jr., UNC-Charlotte transfer and 2014-15 Conference USA Freshman of the Year Torin Dorn and West Virginia transfer Terry Henderson as he returns from injury. Needless to say, NC State will have a different look when it takes the court for its season opener in the fall.
