Gavin Harrison, Chair of Elections, swears in new student body president Paul Nolan during the Student Body Officer Induction. After neither the Nolan/Stafford pair nor the Long/Moravec received more than 40% of the vote during the General Election, a Runoff Election was held, where Nolan won with 1587 votes, 56% of the votes cast.
The new officers that will lead NC State’s 2016-2017 Student Government session were sworn in Monday afternoon before a small group of their friends and family.
The officers who were inducted include Student Body President Paul Nolan and Vice President Brayndon Stafford, Student Senate President Jamie Plummer, Student Body Treasurer Daniel Harper and Student Body Chief Justice Mimi McCarthy. These offices are the highest executive positions in NC State’s three branches of Student Government.
After a brief introduction by Jermisha Dodson, the assistant director of Student Involvement, outgoing Student Body President Khari Cyrus briefly spoke toward the accomplishments of Student Government during his administration.
Cyrus detailed the most important acts passed by Student Government including the Missouri Solidarity Act and the It’s On Us campaign.
“It’s been a wonderful year,” said Cyrus, a senior studying political science. “Now it is time to look toward the future.”
As an NC State tradition, the outgoing officers perform the ceremonious “signing of the desk” as their last acts of office.
Following this, Gavin Harrison, the Student Elections committee chair and a senior studying biological sciences, officially swore in the new officers, with each vowing to serve the students of NC State and uphold the Student Body Constitution.
Each new officer gave a few remarks after the official induction.
“I’m honored to serve NC State as the head of our legislative body,” said Plummer, a senior studying polymer and color chemistry.
Harper, a senior studying mathematics, spoke about his desire to inform the student body of exactly where their money is going to in Student Government.
Each new officer took time to communicate his or her gratitude about having the opportunity to serve as a student body officer.
“I want to thank my family and my lord and savior Jesus Christ for granting me this opportunity,” said Stafford, a junior studying environmental sciences. “I can see the greatness Paul and I will do with the trust of the students.”
Nolan, a senior studying materials science and engineering, expressed how thankful he is to every student who believed in his platform and took the time to vote for him.
The induction of the new officers took effect immediately and officially began the 96th session of NC State Student Government, which will be in effect for the 2016-2017 academic year.
